"Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church can make clear its mission of being a witness of mercy. It is a journey that begins with a spiritual conversion. So I decided to hold a special Jubilee that is focused upon the mercy of God."
With these words, Pope Francis announces the holding of a "Holy Year of Mercy". It is the year of the remission of sins and punishment for sins, of solidarity, of hope and of sacramental penance. The beginning date of the Holy Year chosen by Pope Francis is December 8, 2015, very significant: the Holy Door at St. Peter's, usually walled, will open the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council (December 8, 1965 ).
Censis estimates the arrival of 33 million pilgrims and tourists for the Jubilee, over 70% will be visitors from abroad
Via dei Fori Imperiali will be completely pedestrianized and walking routes will be prepared towards the Vatican for tourists and pilgrims.
The City of Rome has allocated one million euro to promote the reorganization of the facades of the buildings and the decorum of the city.
The Jubilee will be inaugurated on December 8th, with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica. It will end on November 20th 2016.
